Geothermal energy

I think most of us have heard the term “Renewable Energy”, energy that comes from natural resources such as sunlight, windraintides, and geothermal heat, which are renewable (naturally replenished). The last one called my attention because this energy is energy produced in the depths of the. Well, the heat generated in the depths of the planet is taken almost to the surface by thermal conduction and by intrusion of magma layer originated at great depth, this occurs in some volcanic areas. Geothermal manifestations can be easily seen in geysers (a natural hot spring that intermittently ejects a column of water and steam into the air) and hot springs (natural springs producing warm water, usually at a temperature above that of the human.). What happens is that the water of underground water is heated to form hydrothermal resources naturally, creating hot water and steam.

Cerro Prieto en Baja CaliforniaAs it can be seen the main purpose is of this process is to obtain hot water and steam, so that it can be generated electricity that can be used for different purposes. For example, it can be very helpful as a domestic resource like warming homes, greenhouses, drying plants, as well as in laundries, and in a variety of alternative uses.It is said that the cost of this energy is low in comparison with the conventional energy, is reliable, and has environmental advantages. Here in Mexico it only represents 4% of the total energy production. In the northern region of Baja California, where Cerro Prieto is, the percentage is 70%. There are more geothermal resources that can be exploited, we only need appropriate incentives.

It could be a good idea to take into account what others countries are doing in relation to this topic, for example, Indonesia is looking for a private initiative that provides U.S. $ 12,000 million over the next five years to start taking advantage of the estimated 28,100 megawatts. If Indonesia achieve its goal it would become in the first geothermal power producer in the world, ahead of the United States. As a consequence, he would stop emitting 82 million of tons of CO2 from burning coal and oil.

To sum up, geothermal energy is a good source of renewable energy to take into account for its environmental advantages as well as its economic issues.
